Tributes

Kathy Jean Morton was given the gift of life on January 3, 1951. She was the daughter of the late Katie Morton and James Scott. Kathy was educated in the Third Ward District Schools of Homestead before entering her long-term relationship with the Allegheny Valley School in Coraopolis, PA. "Miss Pooh*, as she was affectionately referred to by her mother when a baby, had the biggest, brightest eyes that made you stop and smile. Kathy was always an emotional child and had a *way" about her from a young age. At times funny, stern, adamant, and animated. The foresight of her father, Mr. James Scott, to entrust her welfare with good conscience to the Allegheny Valley School is to be commended. This institution was established to care for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities in 1960. To this very day it offers expert care, understanding and love to its residents that have a variety of physical disabilities, medical complications and behavioral management needs. We, the family have been truly blessed knowing that our Kathy was receiving the best of the best. Kathy competed in and won many medals at the Special Olympics in her younger years. She enjoyed various arts and crafts including hooked rugs and ceramics. We have many keepsakes over the years that have had to be taped and glued as they are now cherished keepsake memories. An amateur photographer, if you will, she was never without her trusted cameras. Kathy would bug you to no end to take your picture, no matter what you looked like, what you had on, etc, etc. If you wanted to show your unhappiness with her the best way at that time was to refuse to let her take your picture. Of course.. then you had a lot of explaining to do. Kathy was not to be denied easily.... Kathy worked many jobs at the Allegheny Valley School over the years from working in the cafeteria to helping escort the more physically challenged residents around the campus. Kathy was not a fan of TV but loved her radio. She enjoyed shopping. To say she was a shoe fanatic is an understatement! She could sponsor a shoe drive by herself, and the family has decided to donate most of her shoes to shoe drives and her clothing back to the residents of the facility and surrounding area. Kathy was loved and she knew it! We will all miss her deeply. Our merciful God, in His infinite wisdom called Kathy home on Sunday morning, September 18, 2022. She is preceded in death by her parents James Scott and Katie Morton, and two brothers, Donald *Ducky" Morton, and James Oliver "Jimmy" Fletcher .Left to cherish her memory are her siblings; Roy L. Fletcher and Yvette Fletcher Sampson; Nephew, Nathaniel Fletcher & family which includes his wife Joy and three sons; great nephews, Nathaniel Jr., James Thomas and Dominik J.; Niece, Juliana and daughter; great niece, Parker; devoted and very special sister-in-law, Jackie Morton; her three sons; nephews, Donald Bump" Jr., Eric & Dellen; brother-in-law Melvin Sampson; and a host of cousins, her extended family at Merakey/Allegheny Valley School, and many friends. Kathy taught us to know what you like and who you like with no apologies!!
