Martha B Hinson

Martha Brunson Hinson, lovingly known to all as "Sis" was born on June 14, 1912 in Manning, South Carolina to the late Chester and Mittie Brunson. God sent her here to visit for awhile and then at 4:30 am on November 13, 2013 Martha said goodbye to this world as God was saying welcome back. In 1936 Martha, Mary Lumsden (her twin sister) and Leander Felder (her eldest sister) moved to Homestead where on April 25. 1939 she met and married the late William Kennie Hinson. Once leaving her residence on Hays Street Martha moved to the Munhall Retirement Residence. In 2011 until her death she resided at the Commons Nursing Facility in Squirrel Hill. Martha joined Park Place Church and became very active. She joined the Mary A. Bumery Missionary Society where she served as Secretary, Treasurer and later became the President and held this office for 13 years. She is a "76" year member of the WMS. Martha also served on the Conference Level as an Executive Board Member for 8 years. Martha was privileged to serve as: Chairperson for Research and Status of Black Women Member, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Senior Choir President, Parliamentarian, currently 76 year Charter member of the Virginia Gladden Club Member for Hospitality Committee of Park Place AME Church Member of Senior Usher Board...The Flower Guild...Sunday School...The Lay Organization...Church Women United...World Federation of Methodist Women...The Steel Valley NAACP along with many other organizations. Her godchildren are the Reverend Thad Wheeler of Gaithburg, MD. Lynda Collie Johnson of Seattle, Washington, and Christopher Smith of Homestead, PA. Family members are Lucille Murdock and the Smalls families, the Virginia Jones families, Catheleen White and the Clark families, Alma Johnson and the Miller families. Martha's adopted families are too numerous to list which includes the late and present members and ministers of Park Place AME Church for the past 76 years, the Homestead and Munhall neighbors and all youths regardless of race, color, or religion. Martha encourages young women and youth to "Be All That You Can Be". She takes the Name of Jesus with her wherever she goes. Her motto: Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.
